HOW IT ALL STARTED

I was introduced to photography by a close friend and photographer, Jeff Clarke. I had a small camera, used sparingly for family photos, but I had never made the effort to learn beyond the press of a shutter button.

One day, I tagged along with Jeff and his girlfriend to do some birding. I didn’t bring my camera because I didn’t care for taking pictures; I simply wanted to hang out. Once in a while, they would hand me their camera and encourage me to zoom in on a bird and take a shot - which I did, and soon I realized that I liked what I saw on the camera’s LCD.

That day, Jeff took a portrait of me from across the street at about a 300mm zoom. When he showed it to me, I was totally blown away and couldn’t understand how he was able to make such an image. Well, I wanted to try it too, so he became my subject for about 10 minutes, by the end of which I was pretty much taking pictures of everything in sight. Some clicks later, I was hooked.

I sold my camera, upgraded my equipment, and started practicing. As I got better, I upgraded again, and again. Unexpectedly, photography became a vital part of my life. Before long, I started getting into landscape photography and found that this is where I feel most satisfied. I love wandering forests and fields, chasing sunsets and waterfalls. I love when the first morning light etches the shape of the landscape, as it illuminates and energizes the natural world. But above all, I love celebrating and sharing the beauty of these marvellous moments.
